San Francisco and Washington state ban PFAS in food packaging

August 25, 2018

Thanks in large part to our research, San Francisco and Washington state recently issued bans on food packaging containing harmful PFAS chemicals. Under Washington's Healthy Food Packaging Act, PFAS will be prohibited in paper food packaging, like microwave popcorn bags, sandwich and butter wrappers, and french fry boxes, starting January 1, 2022. In San Francisco, legislation requiring all single-use food service ware (take-out containers, plates, cups, and food wrappers) be PFAS-free goes into effect January 1, 2020.

Several other states including California, New York, and Rhode Island are following their lead by introducing similar policies.
