Silent Spring’s Dr. Laurel Schaider inducted to UC Berkeley Academy of Distinguished Alumni
In January, Silent Spring Senior Scientist Dr. Laurel Schaider was inducted by the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department at the University of California, Berkeley as a member of its prestigious Academy of Distinguished Alumni. This honor celebrates outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions of CEE alumni.
Dr. Schaider leads Silent Spring’s water quality research program. She is described as “a trailblazer in water quality research, specifically focused on unregulated drinking water contaminants and safeguarding historically marginalized communities from environmental chemical exposures.”
She is also a nationally-recognized expert on PFAS chemicals and is the principal investigator on two major federally-funded projects: PFAS-REACH, a researcher-community partnership funded by NIH that is evaluating PFAS exposures and immune system effects in children in communities with PFAS water contamination; and the Massachusetts PFAS and Your Health Study, one of seven projects funded through the CDC/ATSDR’s Multi-Site Health Study.
The Class 2023 of Distinguished Alumni will be honored at a banquet at Berkeley on April 4, 2024.
